Picture this: you’re at the bar with some friends and the bartender looks your way, “What’ll it be?” You freeze. You panic. What WILL it be? You’re not trying to get bloated in the next five minutes- check beer off the list of options. You’re not about to intentionally give yourself the world’s worst hangover- check wine off the list. You know from experience that dancing with a margarita is never a good idea and even though it’s tempting, you don’t want to start slamming tequila shots with your best friend at the starting line (trust me from experience, never start a night off with tequila shots.. it’ll be a short night).
“I’ll take a water?”
Hell no. For all you not-so-bar- savvy types who need a go-to drink, look no further. I’ve listed the Top 5 go-to drinks of all time.
- Vodka and Pineapple Juice (My Personal Favorite)
Pretty self explanatory- 1 part pineapple juice and 1 part well vodka (or any variation of the two)
For those of you who don’t actually want to taste the alcohol…
I like this one because you can add more pineapple or more vodka based on your preference. It’s easy to make, relatively cheap, and gets the job done (if that’s what you’re going for).
- The Blubes and the Cran
1 part Blueberry Smirnoff and 1 part Cranberry juice- once again, customize to your taste.
Ahh, a classic. This timeless beauty is not quite as sweet as #1 but still full of flavor without the sugar. As above, this one is also easy to make, cheap, and will get your party started.
- White Russian
I KNOW, I KNOW, JUST HEAR ME OUT.
1 oz. Kahlua, 2 oz. vodka (or rum), ½ oz. of cream
For those of you non-believers, trust me I was the same way. Then this past summer on my honeymoon my husband had to carry me out of the pool. The culprit? This baby right here. No, it doesn’t taste like coffee or milk- think chocolate milk on steroids. Cheap, easy, and a great conversation starter. Just shut up and try it, okay?
- Long Island Iced Tea
½ oz. triple sec, ½ oz. light rum, ½ oz. gin, ½ oz. vodka, ½ oz. tequila, 1 oz. sour mix, and your choice of cola or iced tea.
I nicknamed this one the Garbage Pail because literally just throw everything behind the bar into a glass and voila. But in all seriousness, not only are LIITs delicious but if you couldn’t tell from that list of ingredients, it will definitely pack a strong punch. Take it easy with this one though, more than a couple and you’re stomach might not be as strong as you think.
- Rum Punch
2 oz. rum, lemonade to taste
This is a nice refreshing drink- perfect for a warm night at an outside bar. Another variation that I enjoy is to substitute the lemonade with Sprite or 7Up- these stronger flavors mask the rum a little bit more, so if that’s not your thing stick with some good ole lemonade. (Word of caution: pink lemonade does NOT have the desired outcome that you would expect. Steer clear. You’ve been warned)
- BONUS: THE BALTIMORE ZOO
For the nights you don’t want to remember….seriously. This was a college favorite and the bartenders don’t know how to price it so it’s always cheap. Really though…moderation, moderation, moderation, folks. Don’t be stupid.
1 oz. gin,1 oz. white rum,1 oz. vodka, 1 oz. triple sec, 1 oz. peach liqueur, 1 oz. amaretto almond liqueur, 1 oz. grenadine, 1 dash sweet and sour mix, 1 splash beer
So that’s it. Tell us what YOUR go to drink is in the comments- or try one of these out and let us know what you think!
